After years in the addictions field, I qualified as a life coach in 2010, and have a focus on positive and coaching psychology. I have a strong blend of practical, applied experience as both a practitioner and leader, along with a robust theoretical knowledge base.
For me, it is important to consider the whole system that my clients are living and working within. This enables us to explore all the possibilities and consider perspectives that may otherwise be hidden.
Every team sits within a wider context, within a wider organisation or the external organisations, agencies and community it functions within.
Every individual experiences life within the context of multiple systems; family, friends, community, work team, organisation. This is why any services I deliver will always be adapted to the needs of those I am serving.
My qualifications and experience enable me to offer responsive solutions for the individuals and teams that I work with. My continual professional development drives me to learn and develop, so that I can provide evidence based, effective services.
As an addiction practitioner, I completed a Graduate Diploma in Addiction Studies, which gave me a solid foundation to not only deliver evidence-based interventions to my clients, but support the development of these skills in the teams that I went on to supervise and lead.
Whilst working in a strategic management position within a third sector organisation, I completed a management qualification, which enhanced my skills and knowledge, further supporting my leadership roles.
More recently, I have been studying for a Masters in Applied Positive Psychology and Coaching Psychology at the University of East London, which is due to be completed in July 2021. Having previously studied BSc Psychology at the University of York, and qualified as a life coach in 2010, I have always been fascinated in human psychology, with a particular emphasis on what enables people to live in a resilient way even when experiencing adversity.
Whilst in Australia in 2018, I had the opportunity to attend a seminar with Martin Seligman (one of the founding fathers of positive psychology) and hear him speak about how positive psychology and coaching psychology combined offer a scientific, evidence based way to support the wellbeing of individuals and organisations. I subsequently made the decision to further my training. This masters has enhanced my reflective practice and given me a robust critical understanding of the theoretical models which underpin all services I provide.
My time working within substance use agencies, gave me a breadth of experiences. During this time I led on implementing performance management processes and systems across the organisation, liaising and troubleshooting with the commissioning services within the local authority and the home office.
I had the privilege of being part of writing and presenting tenders as part of the commissioning process for services. I loved being able to work with teams throughout the whole process from service design, implementation, to effective service delivery and the ongoing evaluation and monitoring. This would involve working with staff teams to implement considerable change to their working practices, and engage with all the stakeholders to ensure quality service provision continued to meet their needs.
In 2019 I took on the voluntary role of chair of governors at my children’s primary school. This has afforded me the opportunity to continue to use my strategic leadership skills, most recently actively supporting the school leadership team to adapt and respond during the pandemic, with a key focus on the wellbeing of staff and pupils.
“Her approach really engaged our leaders into thinking about how they support themselves and their staff better. All attendees rated Sam’s workshop highly, so much so that we have asked Sam back in for more workshops in 2021!”
